The Fredericks in Dominica: Day 2

On Monday morning, we went to a waterfall I have never been to, but is only 20 minutes away from Portsmouth. Syndicate Falls is a natural water source for the island, so you aren't allowed to swim in it, but is supposedly a good place to see parrots.

They even built a fence in front of the falls to keep people out. If only they had shut the gate too...

It is a really easy hike through the beautiful rain forest. Christina's parents and our friend Lauren's dad were in town visiting so we all hiked up together. We spent a lot of time combing the treetops for parrots. There are two parrots native to Dominica, the Jacko and the Siserou and I haven't seen either.

Somehow, Christina's amazing laser-corrected eyes spotted a bird landing on the highest branch. It was a pretty good sized parrot, all green with some red. It didn't sit still for long, and we soon lost it in the green canopy and began our trek back.

After lunch at the shacks with Justin, we convinced him that he should skip his afternoon classes and come with us to Bense River. It is pretty much my favorite spot on the island, and I don't know if we'll go out there again.

The views of the island are great from the trail head to the river, and you really get a feel for what the island looks like.

I love the Bense River!

Everyone jumped into the freezing cold water. I don't remember it being this cold!

After a while we headed back to the car because we had to turn it back in by 4.
