The Fredericks in Dominica: Day 1

Justin and I had so much fun on our day trip to Champagne and the Sulphur Spa in January, I knew I had to take Sara and Chris there too. So Sunday morning we hopped in the car and headed down to the southern end of the island for the day.

Our first stop was Champagne Bay, about 15 minutes south of Roseau. Sara and Chris tolerated my bad Dominican driving really well, and kept their "backseat driver" comments to themselves. I'm not known for my awesome driving skills, and the road south of Roseau is narrower than one lane with terrible potholes. Thankfully we made it safe and sound, strapped on our snorkel gear and got in the water.

It sounds easier than it was; The black mat that is stretched over the rocks is supposed to help you get into the water, but is actually very slippery!

Champagne Bay gets its name from the hot air bubbles that escape from under the rocks.

The water was really cold and there isn't a lot of sea life in the area, just a few colored fish.

Our next stop was Trafalgar Falls, a big tourist site because it is an easy hike and near the capitol.

We hiked up the rocks almost to the waterfall, and found a great little spot to get in the water and cool down.

Rover Rock Cafe is the only restaurant that serves only local food. All the other restaurants like Blue Bay (where we had eaten the night before) claims another heritage. Chris and I had the fish plate and Sara had the shrimp.

Our last stop for the day was Screw's Sulfur Spa where we enjoyed the natural hot springs.
All in all a pretty good first day on the island.
